Galley Slave NancyNancy's Log

Nancy had great intentions of updating this page with regular Log entries and some links to other related material, such as provisioning, favorite recipes, and perhaps even some examples of her watercolor art... which may still come... someday! However, for many mostly logistical and some momentary technical reasons it has not been practical. Instead, the Plan B replacement for log-type entries is her Musings from a Galley Slave BLOG site, since postings there can be done via email alone, a necessity while offshore. It seems that one can never have enough backup plans in the sailing/cruising life... especially when electronic technologies are involved.

ADDENDUM: Finally... some links to possibly useful information, below.

  • Shanachie's Master Provisioning List

This is a downloadable PDF version of the master shopping list we use to help plan provisioning before major ocean passages. It's a no-frills list that includes just about everything we've stocked at one time or another. Certainly all is not always available everywhere, but it's a good foundation to start with. It can be used as a handy reference for home grocery shopping or planning, too. You should be able to view and/or print the two-page (I print one page per side of one piece of paper) list from Adobe Acrobat Reader (click on the link for the free download from Adobe if you don't already have it).

  • Binnacle Storage Pouch

A one-page downloadable PDF version of sewing instructions for a handy storage pouch that hangs from the cockpit binnacle... no, it doesn't store binnacles! Since I could not find a pattern for anything like this anywhere, I made this one up. I knew what I wanted, but in the end, gleaned ideas from a wide variety of sources to develop the construction method. It seems that professional custom canvas workers keep these things to themselves, and home seamstresses don't have much use for a Binnacle Storage Pouch, though with modification and some imagination, it could have other uses, too. This is certainly not a professional pattern, but, the result was surprisingly good-looking and functional. What more do ya need?! (I probably shouldn't quit the day job yet, though.)
